Forming Passives With Modals


Affirmative FormObject + may, must, can, could, ought to, should + be + verb3
Question FormMust, may, can, should, might + object + be + verb3 (past participle)


Something must / can / should... be done by someone at sometime.

Active : Our English teacher may give an exam today.
Passive: An exam may be given by our English teacher today.

Active : Thomas has written many books.
Passive: Many books have been written by Thomas.

Active : Do you have to pay the bill before leaving the restaurant?
Passive: the bill have to be paid before leaving the restaurant?

Active : Juan can give them some information about the job.
Passive: Some information can be given about the job by Juan.
Passive2: They can be given some information about the JOB by Juan.

Active : You must obey the traffic rules.
Passive: The traffic rules must be obeyed.

Forming Simple Future Passive


Affirmative FormObject + will + be + verb3 (past participle)

Something be done by someone in the future.

Active : We will take the horses to the stable.
Passive: The horses will be taken to the stable.

Active : Will the manager sign the contract tomorrow.
Passive: Will the contract be signed by the manager tomorrow.

Active : Will the boss give me a job?
Passive: Will I be given a job by the boss?

Passive Voice in Present Continuous and Past Continuous !

Example (Passive Voice in Peresent Continuous Tense) :

  1. Active: I am eating healthy food this year
  2. Passive: Healthy food is being eaten this year.
  3. Active: The tourists are shopping Balinese souvenirs.
  4. Passive: Balinese souvenirs are being shopped by the tourists.
  5. Active: I am not taking a driving course.
  6. Passive: A driving course is not being taken.
Examples of Passive Voice in Past Continuous Tense

1. My friend was baking bread when I came.
   (Teman saya sedang memanggang roti ketika saya datang.)
  
    Bread was being baked when I came.
    (Roti sedang dipanggang ketika saya datang.)

2. They were discussing exchange rates at 7 o’clock this morning.
    (Mereka sedang mendiskusikan kurs pukul 7 pagi ini.)

    Exchange rates were being discussed at 7 o’clock this morning.
    (Kurs sedang didiskusikan pada pukul 7 pagi ini.)

Passive Voice

ACTIVE / PASSIVE VOICE. In most Englishsentences with an action verb, the subject performs the action denoted by the verb. These examplesshow that the subject is doing the verb's action. Because the subject does or "acts upon" the verb in such sentences, the sentences are said to be in the active voice.

Simple Present Tense


Active    : Marry helps her son.
Passive : The son is helped by Marry
Active    : Peolpe see peace in family as essential for spiritual growth
Passive  : Peace in family is seen as essential for spiritual growth.

Active     : Muslims perform prayers at least five times a day.

Passive  : Prayers are performed by Muslims at least five times a day.

NOW ... Rewrite these below sentences into Passive Sentence !
